Okay so I need to talk about something that makes me unreasonably happy: tiny, handmade websites. 💕
You know the ones I mean. A page with a hot pink background someone chose because it made them smile. A guestbook with forty entries, half of them just saying "hii!!" A "now playing" widget for a song that hasn't been relevant since 2019, kept up anyway because it's theirs. No cookie banner asking for my firstborn child, no fifteen trackers loading before the page even shows up. Just... a person, saying hi to the internet.
Why this stuff matters (to me, a lot)
Big corporate sites are fine. They're fast, they're optimized, they're exactly the same as every other big corporate site. That's the problem — sameness. The moment I click into someone's little personal corner of the web, with the slightly-too-bright colors and the button they made in an image editor at 1am, I remember the internet used to feel like a place people actually lived, not just a place they were monetized.
Every blinking "under construction" gif, every hand-picked font that definitely isn't a system font, every webring badge linking to someone's friend's cousin's site about vintage teacups — that's a person choosing to make something because they wanted to, not because an algorithm told them to. That's kind of everything, honestly.
So, so many good ones out there
Poking around the sites indexed here on Guno is basically my favorite way to spend a slow afternoon. You never know what you're going to land on — someone's decade-long blog about houseplants, a stranger's very detailed ranking of every roller coaster they've ridden, a webcomic that updates whenever it updates. It's chaotic in the best way.
